How hard is it really to tint my own car?We get this question time to time. Some customers hear the price $195 for a full tint, “well I can just tint it myself” not something we usually suggest but if you want to really try here is a few suggestions.
Supplies needed: A clean facility No dog hair, cat hair, dust, anything that can get on the tint (note you won’t see these items until the tint dries and then you have to start over again after you peel the dry film off and remove all the glue) Heat gun No, your hair dryer will not cut it. Spray bottle With water and a tint solution. Tint tools Special red dot blade holder, 50 pack of razor blades for your blade holder. About 4 or 5 different tools that are different for each tinter. (You will most likely need to borrow these tools because if you purchased them you mine as well have gone to us for tinting at that price.) Quality film This is the hardest problem you will have. You cannot buy quality film. Only quality film manufacturers sell to tint shops. And if you perhaps are lucky enough to get your hand on a box of film it won’t be under warranty. The manufactures only warranty the film if one of their installers install it. Make sure you buy a lot of extra film. Most back window is very hard and it will take about 2 or 3 times to get it right. Patients A professional tinter will take about 2 hours from the time the car pulls in todelivery. Expect to triple or quadruple that time. Cell Phone or computer You will want to watch about 3 to 4 hours of YouTube videos before you start the project. Study their methods of shrinking, cutting, installing, and removing gaskets, how to property clean the windows, what kind of solution you can or cannot use. Now you are on your way to tinting your car. Once you have finished make sure you take pictures of the finished product. Post them, be proud. Now, here is what to watch for over the next three to four weeks. Little bubbles: These are normal but should be gone after 3 weeks Large bubbles: Not normal, borrow those tools again, heat it up and hope it goes away. If not, take it off and redo it. Make sure you google “how to remove tint” Little wiggles: Yep, that is the hair or dirt. Sorry, redo… Lifting: Too much water. Take it off… start over. Turning purple: Sorry, most film that is sold on the streets comes with a two-year warranty but even those have to be installed by an professional shop. HERES OUR NUMBER TWO TIP: DON’T REMOVE FILM BY PEELING IT OF! THIS IS A NO NO NO! Film must be steamed off with a steamer on your back windows. Think of your back window defrosters as facial hair and wax. Rip it off and your defroster lines will have a new home on their forever tint in your garbage can. We are half way through the first month of January and many of us have fallen off the “resolution” wagon already. However, it’s not too late for our vehicles. Here is a simple yet effective goal to work towards: Keeping your car maintained.
Give your vehicle the love it deserves! Keep the inside of your car clean Nothing is more embarrassing than having trash in your car. With a car full of garbage and trash people will think you are a slob. Here are a few tips to keep your car clean.
Be proactive with symptoms When you hear a sound in your car and you KNOW it’s not right, don’t wait to see if it gets worse. You will have a piece of mind that your car is going to be okay, instead of wondering if or when it will break down. Schedule service appointments Your car has a body too and it needs regular checkups. Scheduling at least two service appointments a year will help you keep your car running longer and stronger. Keep your fluids topped off Did you know that most relationships fights could be ignored by just topping off your car fluids? How many times has your partner yelled at your for not filling up the gas tank before coming home? Or filling up the window washer fluid? Checking your fluids every time you get gas will save you hours of fighting per year, and make you more productive each morning. (hint, that is why they have paper towels next to the garbage can too!) Pay attention to your tires Talk about a buzz kill! Nothing ruins your day more than a flat tire! When you are done pumping gas... check your tires! (Another hint, that is why they have air pumps at gas stations too! I know…. If they work) Listen to your service technician You might think that it is a taboo that all service advisors or technician is out to get you. However, most shops really do want to take care of you and your car. They want to keep you as a long-term client, not someone to just rip off once and lose you forever. If they say you need a repair and are unsure, take it for a second opinion. Pay your tickets and toll fines Nothing is worse than wondering if you are going to get a boot on your car. And if you live in Chicago and owe money, don’t think about parking at the airport. You will get booted. Call the city and work something out. You will realize they will work with you. Reward your vehicle and yourself There is nothing like spoiling yourself and your vehicle with a little reward! Window tint is a great way to upgrade your car and not spend that much money!
