5 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW
WHEN LOOKING FOR A PROFESSIONAL WINDOW TINT INSTALLER or SHOP
KNOW THE LAW
Visible Light Transmission (VLT) is the percentage of light allowed through your film and glass. In Illinois, the VLT allowed is very specific and different for sedans, SUVs, and vans.
Tint darkness for sedans:
Tint darkness for sedans:
- Windshield: Non-reflective tint is allowed on the top 6 inches of the windshield (sometimes known as glare strip).
- Front Side Windows: Must allow more than 35% of light in.
- Back Side Windows: Must allow more than 35% of light in.
- Rear Window: Must allow more than 35% of light in.
- Windshield: Non-reflective tint is allowed on the top 6 inches of the windshield.
- Front Side Windows: Must allow more than 50% of light in.
- Back Side Windows: Any darkness can be used.
- Rear Window: Any darkness can be used.
- You can install 35% on all windows (except windshield).
- All windows behind the driver can legally have any tint percent, but only if front side windows are not tinted.
- Front side windows may have 50% light transmission, but only if no window behind the driver is tinted under 30% VLT.
- Vehicles with factory-installed window tint of any darkness on back windows, require the front side windows to allow over 50% VLT.
FIND OUT WHAT FILM THEY CARRY
When looking for an installer, find out what brand of film they carry, and what films they offer from that brand. This is probably one of the most important parts of the checklist!
While the installer might be AMAZING at their job, you also want to make sure they are using a quality film that won't end up costing you more money down the road. Cheap films can fade purple, bubble up, crack, and lose all heat rejection performance within a couple of years. You don’t want to be stuck in a situation where you have to pay to get the tint removed and pay to get your vehicle re-tinted putting. This can put your beautiful car at risk of being damaged, as old tint can be difficult to remove, depending on the vehicle. When looking for a tint shop or installer, we recommend finding one that offers LLumar Films. While no tint is 100% perfect, you can expect top quality performance with long lasting looks when you go with a film from LLumar.

WARRANTY OFFERED?
If you decide to go with a shop/installer that offers one of the brands mentioned above, you are most likely safe. Most of them offer some type of Manufacturer Warranty. Manufacturer warranties, like the one offered by LLumar Films, are always to safest way to go. If anything ever happens to your tint and you need to get it replaced, you can go to any shop across the country that offers LLumar films. LLumar's LIFETIME manufacturer warranty will cover the cost of replacement! Another benefit is that big film companies, like LLumar, typically won't offer their film to a company without a solid track record. That will help you know that the installer/shop is professional.
HAND-CUT OR PLOTTER (MACHINE CUT)
Find out if the shop you are interested in hand-cuts the tint or uses a plotter. If they’re hand cutting you take risk of the razors cutting your gaskets on the outside of the car and possibly leaving scratches on the outside of the glass due to tracing the window. However, if they are using a plotter, the machine perfectly cuts out the window tint for them so that there is no chance of damaging the exterior of your car!
WAITING ROOM, OR DROP-OFF?
Find out how long it's going to take to do the install on your vehicle. Depending on how many cars the shop/installer has lined up for the day, it cold be a few hours to complete your car. They type of car you have can also make a difference. If your vehicle has extremely curved windows, hard-to-reach spots, or is a luxury car, you can expect that your car will take longer and cost more than the standard vehicle. Most installers and tint shops can install TWO FRONT WINDOWS in about one hour depending on the vehicle, this is also providing the install goes on clean the first time. Most professionals are very picky about the finished product as their quality of work is their reputation once your vehicle hits the streets! If you're looking to do a full tint (all side and rear windows) you can expect the install to take an average of 2-3 hours.
If you are getting a full tint done, find out if they have a waiting room. If they do, great, you can kick back and watch a movie! If not, you may want to have a friend/family member meet you there or plan on getting a ride from uber as most window tint shops won't have loaner cars.

I got my '17 Civic tinted for an awesome price compared to what I was quoted at other shops. The tint looks absolutely stunning and their service was superb. Their staff is well trained and can help you decide the best tint and style for your car and is familiar with all state's laws and regulations.
